Groovy Glee: Sing Your Heart Out!

Ages: Elementary

GroovyGlee is a music class for elementary-age children who love to sing and want to find their inner pop star! This class is a funky and fun way for your child to develop singing skills, and dive into the wonderful world of performance in a low pressure environment.

Class Includes: Each week, students warm up their voices and their bodies with vocal and movement exercises, focusing on singing pitches accurately while moving to the beat. Groovy Glee is also an introduction to ‘part’ singing, teaching the students to learn to sing one part while someone next to them sings another. We practice this skill by first singing rounds and ostinatos, and then, when students are ready, we begin to learn to sing in two-part harmony as a chorus. Throughout the semester, while building all of these skills, we learn songs of various styles, such as, pop, folk, gospel, rock, and musical theater, and we incorporate some simple choreography.

Instruments Include: To accompany songs, students occasionally learn to play percussion instruments, such as, tambourines, drums, claves, or shaker eggs. The teacher leads and facilitates the class playing guitar and/or piano.

While the goal of Groovy Glee is to build musical and rhythmic skills in a fun and age-appropriate manner without a big emphasis on performance, there WILL be a short and informal concert at the end of the semester to showcase what we have accomplished together.

GroovyGlee helps kids gain confidence behind the mic and have fun singing their hearts out!

GroovyUke: Get Strummin’!

Ages: Preschool and Kindergarten

GroovyUke teaches young students their first instrument in a manner that is fun and inviting! Starting with the basics, children learn the parts of the instrument, proper etiquette for holding the instrument, and proper techniques for playing chords. As they progress, students begin learning the early music tunes and nursery rhymes that all kids love! In addition to the fundamentals, they also learn how to accompany their strumming with their voices, so they can lead their friends and family in song.

GroovyUke helps students build a musical foundation that will carry them through their musical lives. Not only do they learn basic chords and fun songs, but they also learn important musical concepts such as rhythm, dynamics, following a melody, playing in time (both alone and in a group), and so much more. Since the songs are accessible, kids gain confidence as they experience the joy of playing an instrument and singing along!

Classes Include: Students are introduced to the instrument, learning basic chords and strumming techniques, and practicing chord progressions. With the teacher’s guidance, kids experiment with singing and playing at the same time, becoming little performers themselves while enjoying the experience of making music together.

Instruments and Props include:  A Ukulele for each child, color coded stickers to indicate chords, and a chord sheet for reference.

GroovyUke helps students grow as solo musicians as well as musicians in a group ensemble. Kids learn how to play alone as they gain more and more independence with chords. Students acquire the skills to play in a group as they grasp playing in time with their peers to become competent in matching pitch and melody. Through each GroovyUke lesson children practice executing turn-taking, and most importantly, communicating and expressing themselves through music. These valuable skills will have lasting benefits, not only in the world of music, but in their daily activities throughout their lives!
